'The Cage' Unveiled

05 December 2018

The Brisbane Heat have taken the wraps off their latest innovation at the Gabba ahead of the opening round of the KFC Big Bash League on 19 December in Brisbane.

The Heat have created a batting warm-up net within the seating bowl to allow players to warm-up before and during BBL and WBBL matches.

“The Cage”, located adjacent to the CUA Pool Deck, will enable fans to see the players going through their paces prior to proceeding to the middle.

Heat General Manager Andrew McShea said “The Cage” was another instance of the club providing fans with even greater exposure to the BBL experience.

“It adds another element to the in-game experience for all the Heat fans who come to the Gabba matches,’’ he said.

“The players and coaches were very receptive to the idea of being able to walk from their dug-out to have a hit while the innings is underway, and still retain a full appreciation of the match as it happens,’’ he said.

“As a club, we strive to provide fun, fan-friendly, affordable and high value entertainment. The introduction of ‘The Cage’ alongside the CUA Pool Deck, Heat VR and an upgraded half-time show, means there are more elements than ever to enjoy at Heat games at the Gabba these holidays.’’

“Adding ‘The Cage’ means we can bring the Heat to the fans and showcase the skills and power of the players in an innovative way,” he said.

Long-time cricket supporter and local business Gabba Sporting Products provided the purpose-built net and pitch structure that sits within a race on the eastern side of the ground.

Big-hitting Heat allrounder Ben Cutting is an instant fan.

“It’s a great idea and I’ll be using it for sure,’’ he said. “There’s always plenty of nervous energy around waiting to bat, so it will be ideal to be able to settle the nerves a bit and get my eye in at the same time before batting.”

The Heat squad will come together next week ahead of the BBL season opener on 19 December when the Heat host reigning BBL champions the Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba.

The opening match is selling strongly, with ticket and corporate hospitality sales suggesting a pre-Christmas record crowd is a possibility. Tickets are currently available through Ticketek.

The 19 December game is a double-header with the WBBL Heat taking on the Melbourne Stars from 1.45pm.
